The original Silver Arrow. ⠀
Only four SSKL models were built in 1931 as a pure competition vehicle and marking the crowning end of the development of the Mercedes-Benz S series (W 06) with types S, SS and SSK.
Aerodynamics specialist Baron Reinhard von Koenig-Fachsenfeld designed a streamlined body for the SSKL to be driven by racing driver Manfred von Brauchitsch. The body was made of aluminum by renowned coachbuilder Vetter in Cannstatt and mounted on von Brauchitsch’s car.
At the Avus race in May 1932, the modification had an overwhelming effect: the streamlined Avus racing car had 25% less drag than a traditionally-bodied SSKL, giving it an increased top speed which was approx. 12.4 mph higher than usual. Von Brauchitsch won the race in the futuristic looking car ahead of the previous year’s winner, Rudolf Caracciola. The German radio broadcaster Paul Laven dubbed this odd looking race car a “Silver Arrow”. The AVUS victory marks the beginning of the legendary Silver Arrows that dominated Grand Prix racing in the 1930s.

35 Years of the Mercedes-Benz 124 Model Series
The Mercedes-Benz 124 model series inspires just as much today as it did at its premiere 35 years ago.
The W124 sedan was presented for the first time on November 26, 1984 in Seville, Spain and the station wagon, coupe, sedan with a long wheelbase and cabriolet followed shortly thereafter. In 1993, the model series became the first generation of the upper executive segment of Mercedes-Benz to carry the E-Class name and thereby wrote itself into the long tradition of vehicles in this segment.
